I’ve been pining for a movie like this for as long as I can remember. It felt like giant robots and monsters flicks were a thing of the past, until recently when this project had come to fruition (not to mention a Godzilla reboot in the works at this very moment). Spearheaded by Guillermo Del Toro, the creative team dared to bring a very 90′s anime-esque story to the silver screen, which sounds absolutely nuts to me and the fact that there’s a market here for a film like this to thrive is a wish come true.
So without further ado, here’s the first TV spot for Pacific Rim.
Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of Collider:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive alegendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Just look at that and tell me it isn’t inspired. This could prove to be the greatest homage to the old Japanese monsters flicks of the past. Hell, even the giant creatures are called Kaiju, which means “strange creature” and is also a direct reference to the giant monster genre.
Pacific Rim comes out on July 12.
