THE POSITION

The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic I. Eight (8) vacancies currently exist within the department. This recruitment will also be used to establish a list for future vacancies that may occur over the next 12-month period.Vacaville Firefighter/Paramedics perform skilled work in emergency fire suppression, emergency medical care, fire prevention, investigation activities and other activities that support the protection of life and property. Firefighter/Paramedics assume primary responsibility for patient care at the scene of a medical emergency; assist in the maintenance and care of all stations, apparatus and equipment; and perform other related duties normally associated with the position of a professional Firefighter/Paramedic.

Firefighter/Paramedic I is the entry classification of the series.  Incumbents are promoted to Firefighter/Paramedic II upon successful completion of the Vacaville in-house training academy (typically 14 weeks).

Firefighter/Paramedic I salary:  $6,824 per month (during in-house academy)
Firefighter/Paramedic II salary: $7,677-$9,332 per month

Vacaville Firefighter/Paramedics currently work a 48/96 shift schedule, resulting in an average workweek of 56 hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Certification of successful completion of California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter 1 training, or equivalent, curriculum is required.  College level course work in Fire Science is desirable.

Experience:  One (1) year paid experience as a Firefighter/Paramedic is desirable, but not required.  Possession of Firefighter 1 Certification is desirable.

License and Certificate Requirements (at time of application):

  • Certification of successful completion of California State Fire Marshal approved, or equivalent, Firefighter I training curriculum
  • Current, valid California Paramedic License
  • Proof of successful completion of CPAT (CFFJAC only) dated within 12 months prior to the final filing date.

At time of appointment to the position, successful candidates must possess the following:

  • Current, valid ACLS certificate (issued by American Heart Association or equivalent)
  • Current, valid PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) or PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals)Certification.
  • Current, valid PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support) or BTLS/ITLS (Basic Trauma Life Support/International Life Support) Certification

Physical and Sensory Requirements:
Performs tasks requiring: strength and stamina, such as lifting and moving equipment and objects weighing up to 200 pounds; pushing or pulling objects of up to 215 pounds; sitting, standing, walking on uneven or slippery surfaces, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, stooping, squatting, grasping and crawling; ascending and descending stairs and ladders; work both inside and outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions, odors, dust and pollen; exposure to chemicals, skin irritants, fumes and solvents; frequent hand and arm motion; hand and finger dexterity sufficient to use small tools; turning and bending neck; the ability to see well enough to read gauges, documents and street maps; accurate depth perception; the ability to communicate verbally, including projecting a voice that can be heard in a noisy environment; the ability to hear and distinguish various sounds, such as alarms, voices of co-workers and warning horns or sirens in both quiet and noisy environments; the ability to stand, walk, bend and reach at, above or below shoulder height for extended periods of time; sustained concentration and prolonged commitment to job tasks; interpersonal skills sufficient to work closely with others on a team; high level cognitive, interpretive or judgment skills; ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of frequently changing tasks; and the ability to work alone effectively under stress in situations dangerous to self or others.

The City of Vacaville Fire Department offers testing services for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic through National Testing Network, Inc.  To schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select Fire and sign up for the Vacaville Fire Department recruitment.  Several testing dates and locations will be offered, but the applicant must complete the testing prior to 5:00 p.m., February 13, 2017.  Failure to complete the FireTeam test process prior to the final filing date will result in disqualification from the recruitment process.

TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE

Background Process for Selected Candidates: March/April 2017 Anticipated Start of Employment: June 2017 These dates, including the final filing date, may be changed due to business or administrative necessity. Applicants must successfully pass the FireTeam testing process, submit all required documentation with their City of Vacaville application, and meet minimum requirements for the position in order to continue in the process.   Based on the size of the candidate pool, a limited number of the highest scoring candidates, who have met all other requirements, may be invited to continue in the examination process which will include the paramedic skills test, oral board interview, comprehensive background investigation and a post-offer, pre-employment medical and psychological evaluation.

The evaluation process may include testing on the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, and procedures of paramedic-level emergency medical care; applicable state and local laws, codes, regulations, and policies pertaining to paramedic-level emergency medical care; elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; and driving techniques for ambulances in accordance with traffic laws. Technical principles of fire fighting and hydraulics as applied to fire suppression and prevention; and driving techniques for fire apparatus in accordance with traffic laws.

Ability to: Learn technical principles of fire fighting and hydraulics applied to fire suppression and prevention; learn the geography of the City and local area, location of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards; maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic accreditation; think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; keep simple records and prepare reports; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; learn Fire Department policies and procedures; and work in support of the City’s mission and vision.
