Way back in the mid 90s, Sarah Susanka published the book, The Not So Big House. Whether it changed the way people looked at housing, or simply gave a voice to a movement well under way, the idea has grown bigger to inspire homeowners to go smaller, morphing into the current “Tiny House” trend. Tiny houses can be extreme—with as little as 100 square feet; the average is a more manageable 400-500 square feet, often housing couples, even families of three or more.
There are myriad reasons the tiny house appeals to homeowners, from wanting to keep stuff to a minimum, to a desire to be more environmentally friendly. One of the biggest reasons is financial: a smaller house means (generally) lower cost and less debt in the long run. And since the trend is still on the upswing, it can mean better value.
The Twin Cities are chockfull of small homes (though some are large [600-1000 square feet] by tiny house standards): many a Minneapolis garlette or Richfield rambler would technically qualify as small, though these small homes can be found throughout Twin Cities areas-of-a-certain-age.
