Finding Joy in Humble Work

By Eowyn @DrEowyn

“This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.”
– Ecclesiastes 5:18-20

I used to dread the book of Ecclesiastes because of its negative tone. But after many years and many ambitious projects, some successful, some not, this verse stands out as filled with hope. Instead of hoping contentment is found once one has been successful, realize that it is found right here and now in the journey, or not at all. It’s right here and now, in doing the dishes, in working the garden, in doing the paper work, in hammering the next nail… if we deliberately thank God in the midst of all the difficulties and troubles, and trust Him.
