Finding Dory airs tonight on 6ter. This sequel to Finding Nemo - released in theaters in 2016 - takes place a year after the events of the first film. But did you know director Andrew Stanton didn't want to do Nemo right away?
Released in our theaters in June 2016, 13 years after Finding Nemo, Le Monde de Dory takes place 1 year after the events of the first opus. Still directed by Andrew Stanton - who is here supported by Angus MacLane - the feature film totaled more than $ 1 billion at the international box office (940 million for Finding Nemo) and 3.4 million viewers in France (against 9.4 million for Nemo). In this film, Dory, the blue surgeonfish with amnesia, reunites with her friends Nemo and Marin. The three of them set off in search of Dory's past. A funny and touching film that allows us to learn more about this touching character.
Yet despite the success of Finding Nemo, the director had no plans to make a sequel to his animated film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2003, the latter also claims not to like the suites " unless the story demands it". In 2012, after the first rumors announcing a second installment in Finding Nemo, Stanton even cracked a tweet to refute the start of a sequel. On July 17, 2012, the director tweeted:" Haven't you learned anything from Chicken Little? Let everyone calm down. Don't believe everything you read, there is nothing to see yet " followed by the hashtag "skyisnotfalling" (always referring to Chicken Little).
However, during his work on the passage to 3D of Nemo - (which found its way to cinemas on January 9, 2013), the director changed his tune. During our meeting with Andrew Stanton for the promotion of World of Dory, he confided: " I'm sure you can find plenty of articles on the internet where I say there will never be a sequel to Finding Nemo, which the film holds on its own. And that's what I really thought. Then we did WALL-E and John Carter, and in 2011 we were asked to review Finding Nemo in 3D. I had not seen the film for 7 years, I had completely forgotten what it was like to see it on the big screen. I really got caught up in the movie, and I worried about Dory. I told myself that she could forget Marin and Nemo and then recognize them thanks to her emotional memory. And throughout her adventure, she always wonders where she came from because the love she has for her parents is still buried in her. I felt like I had left a door open. It didn't leave me, I couldn't stop thinking about it. And it was only because of these problems with Dory that I got over it. "

The filmmaker therefore dug the story of this character to show what the surgeonfish had gone through in his past. Stanton explains that this character - seen by audiences as jovial and funny - has more depth than it looks: " I realized that if I had all his past history in mind, this was not the case for everyone, and especially not for the spectators. People walked out of cinemas with amused and fond memories of the character, but I have always seen this apparent lightness as a mask. Realized we had to tell the audience her story, fill in the gaps about what happened to her since childhood ".
A structure imagined for "Le Monde de Nemo"
Andrew Stanton and his co-director Angus MacLane chose to tell Dory's story through little flashbacks. This structure was an idea originally conceived for Finding Nemo. Stanton had indeed planned to reveal the loss of Marlin's family through progressive flashbacks that would be triggered by events he would experience in the present. But the idea didn't come to fruition, not least because it was difficult to fully appreciate this rigid and stern father character at the start of the film. So the Nemo Finding narrative was edited to show Marlin's tragedy at the very beginning, and flashbacks were dropped. But the idea stayed in the back of the director's head, who took over this structure to tell Dory's great story.

At the exit of The World of Dory, the Moviefone site asked Andrew Stanton if a third part was considered, the latter replied: " I really feel like this movie was the missing piece, emotionally, in the first installment. Now, I have stopped saying "never" because we have expanded the universe and there are a lot of new characters that are introduced in Dory's World. Again, I wouldn't be surprised to see this world continue to grow as it does with the Toy Story saga. So I learned to say simply, that to my knowledge, it's over. But we'll see over time.. "Stanton therefore leaves the door ajar for a continuation ...
