Finding Community in the City

By Homesmsp @HomesMSP

You know we are community oriented.  Sometimes it's hard to find.

Yesterday we experienced it in Downtown Minneapolis.  Not in the heart of the business district, but on the fringe of the commerce center of downtown.  Community should have gathering points, sometimes literal gathering, but sometimes just a common experience, a communal place people identify with.

In the area between Loring Park and Nicollet Mall there is that point of mobile space that says community... the Loring Greenway. It is only a few blocks long, but it is more than just a way to get from place to place... it has stopping points for people to gather or just sit and for kids to play as it connects townhomes, condos and apartments with Loring Park and the city.  (Homes for sale on Loring Greenway, condos for sale in downtown Minneapolis.)

It joins Nicollet Mall, another mobile gathering space, at Westminster Presyterian Church. Its art and architecture are a pivotal place of identity.  Regular visitors to the space may take it for granted sometimes, but even walking by they know it's there.  They feel the presences of something familiar where assurance resides.

Westminster has been a telling presence in downtown Minneapolis since 1857, and its presence is felt not only for its congregation on Sunday mornings, but also as an active and influential member of the city. Westminster collaborates with other faith, business, and social service partners to make our community a place where justice flourishes, love is shared, and people are valued.

The Granlund scultpture out front can be absorbed with intense inspection, but it can also be appreciated over time.  Passersby may not know the name of the sculptor nor the name of the sculpture, but they innately know this is a description of community and gathering.  Of family descended from the creator. Each of us unique, but in union.

It is natural to worship in such a space, both outside and inside this building.

Happy Easter.
