I had a dream this summer. I frequently operate in a deficit in terms of when I post a review to my YouTube, and when I post to the site. I really wanted to close the gap, and once my school year starts again, my students are going to take up a lot of time. So, over the next two days, we are rapid firing reviews. Let’s go!
Find Me falling is a Netflix movie of the week starring Harry Connick Jr as an aging rockstar who moves to the Greek isles to a nice coastal home, only to find out that his house is a haven for suicide. This is a romantic comedy. So, people come to his cliff side house, walk to the cliff and jump off. All the time. This is the movie. He’s also learning the culture, and how to adult on his own, and as the film progresses, he interacts with a few women, one of which he might actually know, as well as another who is an aspiring artist.
Harry Connick Jr’s acting here is pretty bland. he is clearly just getting paid, and enjoyed the vacation. He’s not invested in this at all, and the plot is so weird. I heard this was in development hell for years before Netflix decided it needed something to release. The audio description here is by International Digital Center, written by Betty Capone, and narrated by Kimberly Chatterly. This is called thankless work. I was so bored by this, because our leading man has the antithesis of charisma, that instead of thinking about the details of the audio description on the first watch, i was thinking how much I hated this film, and how many times betty probably had to watch this to make sure she got all the details right.
Then, you think about all those crew members who have no idea the movie they are making an awful film, and they are doing their best rigging, or grip, or wardrobe. All those production assistants, the whole crew, plus the audio description team, and I don’t think this film could have ever been good. Case in point, the horribly thought out Rumor Has It, where Jennifer Aniston realizes her family is the real life inspiration for The Graduate, as she meets a charming man (Kevin Costner), who she knows has slept with her grandmother and her mother. So, what does she do? Who starts to sweep her off her feet? And the funny thing is, someone thought that concept would be cute. THAT film has an excellent cast, with Aniston, Costner, Shirley Maclaine, and mark Ruffalo, and it has a bigger budget, and a better director. It ends up being slightly more entertaining, but it can’t really ever be a good film, because there’s this odd central concept that is just so icky. This film is still about Harry Connick jr trying to keep people from killing themselves on his property.
An awful movie. truly.
