Financial Tranquility

Money is often a source of contention. Whether it be with ourselves or significant others, there is always a fight relating to money. Well, it doesn’t have to be like this. We can change it if we change our mindset when it comes to spending vs. saving.

One thing that bothers me about American society is the need to spend. We always have to “keep up with the Joneses.” But, why? What is the reason? Will it make us happy/look successful/make life easier? The answer is no. It will do nothing but add to our already stressful lives. Not very tranquil if you ask me! But, how do we solve this problem? Easy: budget, save, and be free.

  1. Monthly budget: Figure out how much money is coming in vs. how much is going out. Trim items that are too high (i.e. dining out, shopping, other frivolous activities). Look for ways to save (i.e. trading in the Lexus for a more affordable car, saving up for new furniture instead of financing it, etc.).
  2. Debt: Get rid of it as much as possible. It is unnecessary and eats into your monthly cash flow. And forgive me, but there is no such thing as “necessary debt” (i.e. student loans, mortgage, auto loan). You could save for a used car, live in a house that is within your means, or go to a less costly school or find a scholarship. Emergencies are one thing but buying a really expensive house that is way too big for your family is another.
  3. Save: After the budget and debts are figured out, make sure you are paying your savings account, IRA, 401(k), etc. first. Paying yourself is important as it will lead to financial stability in your life.
  4. Avoid money traps: Does shopping make you spend “money you don’t have?” Easy, don’t engage in that activity (unless you absolutely need to). Is buying a new video game or book a trap? Get a library card or sign up for gamefly.com. There is nothing telling you that you have to have that item right now except for you.

Now, stick with it! Paying down debt and reducing monthly costs will lead to financial tranquility. You will have more time to devote to the things you love and you will spend less time worrying about paying the bills. It may be hard sometimes but I believe the true key to happiness is not green; it is surrounding yourself with people and activities that you love.
