Figs and Blankets

By Nutrisavvy

My fig tree starting blooming abundandly the other day as I could fill a bowl or two and still see plenty ripe ones available for picking. Alas, the tree is too tall. But mommy has learned to climb the tree to keep her girls from following her indoors for more ripe figs (especially since she’d just mopped the kitchen floor and managed to get them outside detouring through the dining room’s french doors).

These late summer evenings make it enjoyable for me to be outdoors with my girls while the sun is still out, bright in the sky.  Today my girls discovered some figs lying on the ground. Since those have been picked out by bugs, and scorched by the sun, I decided to give my girls some fruit fresh from the tree. Since I’d picked all the close ones and already stored them in the kitchen, it was either climb a tree or get a ladder — neither of which I’m excited to do. But the delight was so intent at seeing this type of fruit, I couldn’t let them down.

Julia’s first look was a bit pensive and she studied the villi-like red/pink flesh and put it down twice on the napkin I brought her, and then finally put it up to her nose. She slowly took a miniscule bit and then, a long 30 seconds later exclaimed:

“I LIKE it!

Ailish decided she liked them right from the start.

After two rounds of climbing I finally satisfied their “I want more fig, I WANT more fig… in stereo, of course!”

The next thing I know, they’ve entered the laundry room and dragged a towel outside, and layed down on their ‘blanket’ below the fig tree, staring right up through the branches out to the sky.

My girls can be so adorable at times! : )

Of course I didn’t have my camera on me (and don’t own an iphone).

Figs are naturally sweet and rich in phytonutrients, vitamins and antioxidants, including Vitamins A, E and K. And, at only 74 calories per 100g, not a bad treat! Stay tuned for more on the fig on my FOOD OF THE MONTH coming up soon!
