Fightmilk – ‘Overbite’

London four-piece Fightmilk have shared the animated video (directed by Jono Ganz) for ‘Overbite’ ahead of the release of their second album ‘Contender’ via Reckless Yes on 14 May. The song – which will resonate with anyone who has a fear of the dentist (personally, I still haven’t got over the time when one tried to pull my wisdom tooth out and – after starting the procedure – decided to tell me ‘I have the skills but we don’t have the equipment’) – is all about being satisfied with who you are: ‘This is one of the most uplifting, happy songs we’ve written, and by bookending the album with big joyful explosions, maybe it’ll do something to soothe the collective woe we’ve all been living through’.

‘Last night I freaked out and I thought I was dying’ are the opening lyrics as the double bass drives the song forward with Lily recalling a lost love who moved away before fondly remembering all their features and quirks: ‘I can’t stop looking at your two front teeth, they sit so sweet on your bottom lip’; ‘I like your overbite’. There’s also a reassuring tone throughout -‘You don’t have to smile if you don’t want to, you’re just perfect as you are’; ‘I think you’re cool’ – as it celebrates individuality. The band describe the sound as both ‘gothy surf-rock’ and ‘like every My Chemical Romance song being played at the same time’ – and it’s easy to see why, but we also heard elements of the much-missed Doe and Fresh in its anthemic tones.
