The Fatherhood (Fiat 500L 12″ Remix) Video Review

After the success of their ‘the motherhood’ video, Fiat have just realised a version for dads called ‘The Fatherhood’ telling the dads side of the story

The video tells the truths of what it’s actually like to be a parent, and more importantly being a dad, and some of the stuff we have to go through, it’s something that I think all dads can relate to, and it’s something you can’t really understand until you’ve experienced it.

Fiat have done a pretty good job here. The video is based in the 80′s, with an electronic/new romantic tune, we see our dad putting his two young babies into his car (The Fiat 500L) and taking them off for a drive in a desperate attempt to get them to sleep, I think most dads will have done on more than one occasion, I know it’s something I’ve done myself, when all else fails, it’s stupid o’clock in the morning, you have work the next day and you’ll do just about anything for just a few hours sleep.

As our dad drives along with his crying babies in the back he breaks into song, reflecting on what his life was like before and after having his kids.

I know myself I’ve done this, well maybe not breaking into song, but I certainly wondered on more than one occasion what the hell I’d done. I don’t think anything quite prepares you for the massive change to your life having a baby has. If you did, I’m not sure too many of us dads would have done it, at least not initially.

I particularly liked the line “Where am I now? What is my name? Are these my kids? Am I insane?”  (while dad sings with full new romantic backing band! Maybe he dreamt that bit from lack of sleep.) I’ve asked myself that question quite a few times over the last 21 months, I’ve never quite got the answer.

Our dad then goes on (with the help of a Kate Bush inspired character complete with unicorns) to convey what the reality of being a dad, covering everything from not having sex any more, looking forward to the time when they aren’t sick on you, wondering if he will he turn into his dad and looking forward to getting his own back “when I’m dancing at your wedding”

The video ends with dad pulling up at home with babies asleep only for them to be woken by a siren going off, dad looks as desperate as I’ve felt when you’ve clocked up a bunch of miles (an average of 1300 according to a survey Fiat conducted) only for them to wake as you pull up or as you’re doing your best to get them out of the car seat as quietly and as gently as you can.

Fiat have obviously spoken to a lot of dads about their experiences, most of what the video talks about I’ve gone through. It’s not easy being a parent and I think it’s different for us dads to, we often get forgotten about but we’re going through our own set of emotions and struggles just as much as mom is.
