The trigger might be loaded, as some would like to put the nail in the coffin of the pop music world, but twenty-year-old Norwegian artist Sigrid is ready to fight back with “Don’t Kill My Vibe.”
The anthemic title track suggests just because she’s young doesn’t mean she’s naïve. The days of talking down to the pop singer are over, tearing her down won’t work, and she will, time after time, rise again. So please, just stop trying to kill her vibe.
The singer’s tunes are happy, lighthearted and uplifting, but she’s not afraid to call someone out for second-guessing her, underestimating her worth or place.
Don’t kill my vibe/ Oh, don’t break my stride/ You think you’re so important to me, don’t you/ You love to tear me down/And pick me apart/Then build me up like I depend on you/ But I throw myself from heights that used to scare me/Guess you’re surprised I’m the puzzle you can’t figure out.
“Plot Twist” continues on with the girl power pop themes, voicing frustration against playing games in relationships. Echoes of “shots fired,” fill the soundscape along the likes of Alessia Cara, Katy Perry, and Lorde. She’s got the same musical cocktail mix of sugary pop and salty lyrical snapbacks.
“Dynamite” is a beautiful piano-driven ballad, with heartbreaking delicate vocals. (“You’re safe as a mountain/But know that I am dynamite”). Just like Adele was blowing away audiences at the age of 18, the hopes are high for this 20 year old rising star. Sigrid was recently included in Rolling Stone’s top 10 artists to know for March 2017.
The Island recording artist debuts her EP “Don’t Kill My Vibe” on May 5.
