Father’s Day Painting

Here’s a simple painting that works for Father’s Day and gives students a chance to practice making 3D block letters. I had a mixed age class, so I let them choose if they just wanted to make block letters. This artist, Ryan, is always up for a challenge, even though he is only in kindergarten.
1. Draw the “I” and heart on the top half of the watercolor paper.
2. I think it helps to draw the left “D”, then the right “D”, then fill in the middle with the “A”. It gives you the best chance of balancing the letters within the space. Add the 3D lines if desired.
3. Students trace the letters with a chisel tip Sharpie, draw some patterns inside with crayon, then painted with liquid watercolors.
