Fantastic Fire Breathing ...

As you'll probably know, we wrote a lot of MSMR both this year, and last. Following a stint of supporting the Brooklyn-based duo, Laurel has released her new single, Fire Breather, for free on Soundcloud and, whilst you don't have to pay a penny to hear it, it'll probably end up as one of the better singles you get yourself this year.
The beauty has one of those timeless voices and, alongside a relatively simple backdrop, it sweeps over you in a very dark way. There's no doubt that, despite quite obviously possessing a particularly jaw-dropping set of lungs, she holds herself back within the verses of this song so that, in the choruses, she can really let loose and offer something that sits right in the middle of Florence & The Machine, and the likes of Delilah, or Diana Vickers.
The use of drums is particularly pleasing in here and, despite not being outrageously new, comes across as pretty darn refreshing too. The old element of fire surrounding it too makes it a very tribal type of sound and, whilst you wouldn't readily put her face next to this sort of genre, we can't help but find this fascinating little track a bit of a masterpiece.
Our main qualm with this single is that it just doesn't last long enough, though, this just means that we want to play it over and over again. We believe a supporting slot for the likes of MSMR suits this sound beautifully. It means that the Brooklyn duo won't be upstaged, but, holds more than enough on its own so that you really want to research who the hell you'd been listening to.
