Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa: Bad Leonfelden, Austria

The lobby of the Falkensteiner Hotel in Bad Leonfelden, Austria definitely makes an impact.

I could sum up by visit to the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa in Bad Leonfelden, Austria in two words “idyllic bliss.”

Located in the Kneipp town (Kneipp is a type of  hydrotherapy based on the works of Sebastian Kneipp, a Bavarian priest and one of the founders of naturopathic medicine) of Bad Leonfelden, Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa is a wellness hotel, home to the large Acquapura SPA and a unique Kneipp Pure Living wellness program.

It’s the type of place where hotel guests walk around with a dreamy look on their face, wrapped in fluffy white bath robes and slippers.  I lived in my white bath robe while I was there,  reluctantly changing to go down to dinner where Mediterranean/Regional cuisine is served.

I also did bring myself to leave the hotel to explore the Mühlviertal district where the hotel is located. Guests can choose from activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, horse back riding, cross-country skiing or golf.  We chose the Erlebnisweg Moorwald, a walking path with a Kneipp theme since it highlighted the uniqueness of the area.  Although it was less than 4km long, it was hard to leave the spa area and change out of my comfy robe.  I consoled myself by knowing how good a dip in the large indoor/outdoor pool would feel afterwards.

As part of the wellness program, a variety of classes are also offered.  Yoga and Qigong were offered when I was there.  I choose Qigong and even managed to convince my reluctant husband to join me.  He must have been VERY relaxed from all his sauna time, as he has never done Qigong in his life.  I snuck glimpses of him throughout the class and he was definitely into it.  Afterwards, even he commented on how relaxed he felt!   Although he enjoyed it, I haven’t been able to convince him to do Qigong since then.  I guess the Falkensteiner magic had worn off.

A wide range of spa services are offered.  I had a difficult time choosing, but finally settled on a 30 minute massage.  Unfortunately the massage therapist didn’t show up and as I was leaving later that morning, it couldn’t be rescheduled.  The staff assured me that this never happened and were quite worried about the massage therapist since they were unable to reach her.  I hope that she is OK.

My only complaint about my time at the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Bad Leonfelden is that it wasn’t long enough.

I was only there for 2 days and one night.  I would recommend a minimum of 2 nights, ideally more.  In addition to the spa and activities, the cultural capital of Linz is only 30km away and the UNESCO town of Krumau in the Czech Republic is 42km away.  I would recommend planning a lot of downtime to enjoy the relaxing spa area, but also dragging yourself from the spa area to do some sightseeing or some of the activities since the Mühlviertal has a lot to offer.
