Extradition Case of Hacker Lauri Love Causes U.K.-U.S. Tension

One of the most wanted hackers by the United States, Lauri Love, is fighting to stop his extradition from his home country of the United Kingdom to face charges in an American jurisdiction.

Lauri Love is currently facing some mental health difficulties, which have prompted his team of lawyers to file a plea to the federal court.

His lawyers, along with other supporters from the general public, are pushing on the government to stop Lauri Love's extradition and be tried in a local court system.

An appeal has already been submitted to the courts regarding Lauri Love's extradition. In late November, officials announced they would reserve their decision to a later date-expectedly early next year.

The case has put British Prime Minister Theresa May in a state of a dilemma on the correct action to take. The general public is advocating for her to act on the case and stop the extradition while the U.S. government is pressing for a potential indictment in Lauri Love's case.

Lauri Love holds a dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and that of Finland, where his mother comes from. He went to Finland for further studies but he never completed his studies there.

In all the institutions Lauri Love has attended, he ended up dropping out due to struggles with his mental health at the time. In his early life in Finland, he served in the army for about six months but ended up being discharged for the same reason.

The U.S. government accuses Lauri Love of hacking and compromising data from the United States Army, the Federal Reserve and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

His case has been running for more than three years since the National Crime Agency apprehended him and took away his computers.

When Lauri Love was arraigned in court in May 2016, the judge ruled that the National Crime Agency did not have to force Lauri Love to surrender his passwords.

Since then, more hearings have taken place all to decide on whether Lauri Love will be extradited to the U.S.

The case has been complicated by Lauri Love's statements that if he's extradited, he is likely to terminate his life in prison.

Lauri Love's father, Alexander Love, has been in the forefront to fight and advocate for the court to stop the extradition of his son.

Alexander Love testified in front of the judges offering statements about his son's mental health diagnoses of depression and Asperger's syndrome.

In the hearings that took place in June of 2016, a psychologist by the name Simon Baron-Cohen testified on behalf of Lauri Love suffering from several health conditions.

He confirmed that Lauri Love suffered from depression and Asperger's syndrome, not to mention a severe case of eczema that's resistant to antibiotics.

Things did not go as expected for Lauri Love as the Westminster Court judge ruled that he should be extradited to the U.S.

Since then, he and his team of lawyers-plus other interested parties and organizations such as The Courage Foundation-have been fighting for his extradition to be stopped.

The 32-year-old now lives with his parent in Suffolk waiting and hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Things have been unfolding so fast for the team of lawyers, and anyone interested in the case to fathom it.

Members of parliament have written a letter to England and Whales Attorney General Jeremy Wright concerning the Lauri Love case.

They highlighted that Lauri Love would be in a very high risk of suicide if he is sent to the U.S. and subsequently imprisoned.

The members of parliament are pushing Wright to involve the American counterparts and act on the case of Lauri Love. It is the second time the members of parliament have raised their concern on Lauri Love's case of extradition.

It was back in October 2016 when more than 100 members of parliament wrote a letter to the then-U.S. President Barak Obama. They asked him to block Lauri Love's extradition to protect his safety while in his home country.

Many of Lauri Love's supporters are submitting appeals to the British Prime Minister to negotiate with the U.S. in order to block the extradition. The case is putting Theresa May in a position that she is to decide on who to listen to.

Meanwhile The Courage Foundation, which is running continuous campaigns in support of Lauri Love, has been fundraising for his defense effort.

The defense team is worried about Lauri Love being extradited, reading from how the government is reluctant on protecting the victim.

The U.K. Home Secretary Amber Rudd did authorize the extradition of Lauri Love to be tried in United States courts.

This is giving Lauri Love and his family sleepless nights knowing that he could be extradited at any time. It has prompted the family, and all of Lauri Love's supporters, to file a petition in the high court to challenge the extradition.

Other petitions are circling the internet on sites like Change.org, as well.

Theresa May has not yet come out in public to declare her position in the matter. It is the reason that most Lauri Love's supporters are worried that he will end up being extradited.

In late November, the courts reserved the appeal verdict to be announced at a later date, likely early 2018.

For now, only the judges and the state's officials will come to the rescue of Lauri Love and stop his extradition for him to be tried in the United Kingdom's jurisdiction.
