Five days of music, events and exotic food take Amsterdam by storm starting 22 June with the start of the annual Roots Festival.
Celebrating its 14th year going, the festival features the intriguing crossover of cultures in the Dutch capital thanks to its ever evolving international community.
This year, the festival theme is ‘tracks,’ a nod to the Western and non-Western influences on music and how that impacts the European idea of identity.
Always popular with music fans, this year is sure to impress yet again. The five day line-up of performers scheduled for some of Amsterdam’s finest theatres including Milkweg, Sugar Factory and Paradiso.
Acts include: Chile’s blues phenomenon Illimani Historico & Eva Ayllon, progressive South American musicians Brazilian Caravan and traditional music of Africa from Angola Urbana.
Beyond the global beats, the Roots Festival also features flavours from the world over. Foodies can sample typical dishes of Suriname, Mexico, South America and more.
The festival culminates in one big open-air party on 26 June in Amsterdam’s Oosterpark. Settled in the east part of the city, the park transforms into a playground of musical performances, food and souvenir tents, and loads of locals and tourists gathered to enjoy the best of Amsterdam’s roots.
