Some music has the power to move us incredibly deeply, but we simply can’t explain the reasons in words. Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago is an album that instantly comes to mind for its immediacy and intimacy, yet why the exact phrases and sounds are so profoundly soothing, I can’t exactly say. These are the thoughts that came to mind when first listening to Phoria, who released their new EP, Display, last week. The minimalist environments that dwell inside its four tracks are built on cloudy synths and hushed vocals that sound like an amalgamation of all of the parts of my favorite electronic auteurs put together. Most importantly, each song is somehow instantly evocative in a way that makes you never want to vacate the space it creates. The artists they’ve played alongside are also ones that could be listed as influences, such as Little Dragon, Efterklang, Active Child and Ultraista (Nigel Godrich’s project). Delicate yet potent, Phoria’s Display is about to become an essential part of your collection.
