EVIL EMPIRE #1 Review

Posted on the 07 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

Evil Empire starts out in a flash forward, 25 years from right now.  We see a take on what society could look like.  When it goes back to present day where we meet Reese, an underground rapper, and we go through the story of politics and scandals to what will eventually lead to an Evil Empire.

When I read the first couple pages of this title, I wasn’t sure what direction it was going to take.  It was building up to see some serious stuff happen and then it flashed back to the present.  We get introduced to Reese and Sam Duggins, the main characters of the story.  It was a lot of story telling and political talk going on for most of the book.  I am not sure but this seems like the writer is trying to express his thoughts on the country through the dialog.  I can see some sort of spark happening between Reese and Sam.  Their conversation gets interrupted due to some news of a murder.  More politics and interviews.  Sam and Reese head to the wake and that is when the bomb is dropped.

I was somewhat interested in the beginning of the story.  When flashed back to present day, it started to drag a bit for me…until the end.  What a cliffhanger!  I always think it is good to keep the reader wanting more.  Suspense and endings like this book had make me want to read the next one. Kudos for drawing me in! Another piece I liked about this book was the art work.  It had the visual style of a comic that I enjoy.  It was detailed enough for a comic while not being too realistic.  The colors had a nice cool tone throughout the book which fit the overall feel of it.  In case you heard of the writer and creator Max Bemis before, he is also the lead singer of the band Say Anything.
