Chirping – Canary Wharf SoundCloud

“Canary Wharf”, the newest single from Chirping’s EP, Lux, plays on dichotomy to envelope the listener fully in the sweet middle ground that is neither too north, south, east or west. Lead singer Carl Vikberg’s deep, Aaron Dessner-esque (of The National) vocals sit octaves below the vibrant guitar centerpiece. The effect is like “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” — by lending the spotlight to the guitar, nothing is too low or high. It’s just right.

This theme is continued in the chorus where Vikberg sings that there are acts of violence as well as the sounds of silence late at night. Additional lyrics seem to place them all over the map, from the Canary Wharf district in London to Paris. However, even as Vikberg says, “Take me home,” I would argue this is the band’s sonic “home”.
