Everything Everything have released a surprise EP just before their biggest ever UK and Ireland tour. It includes two new tracks, a cover of Neil Young’s ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ and a Tom Vek remix of ‘Ivory Tower. The video for ‘Breadwinner’ features a Lawnmower Man-style rendering of EE frontman Jonathan Higgs dancing around and complements the song’s line: ‘walk into the wall like you’re an NPC’ (that means non-player character if, like us, you’re not entirely up to date with computer speak).
The song finds the band in eminently danceable form with the toe-tapping hooks backing up Jonathan’s words that take in everything from 9/11 to zulu fights and a big build-up to the tongue-in-cheek admission: ‘One flat Earth, they were right’. He finishes by bringing out his falsetto to rally against the world: ‘You gotta be kidding me?’; ‘Now you see the devil, how you gonna live with the devil?’
Produced by James Ford, this is a most-welcome extra for all Everything Everything fans. It’s a great way to celebrate a tour that takes in an Ally Pally show.
The other new song, ‘The Mariana’, deals with themes of male identity and depression. If you are suffering or know someone who is, please reach out for help. Details for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) can be found here.
