Everyday Sexism in Sport – but Sometimes You’ve Got to Laugh

By Girlontheriver @girlontheriver

There’s been a lot in the news about the disgraceful tweets sent to the super-talented Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle during a Sky Sports Q&A this week, confirming suspicions of a shocking level of sexism when it comes to women’s sport. But there’s one example of everyday sexism in sport that is so casually offensive that I can’t help laughing at it.

It’s not on Twitter. It’s not in the media. No, it’s right here in my home. On my running machine, in fact.

So bad it’s good

Just take a look at the images accompanying the ‘slow down’ and ‘speed up’ buttons. Exactly. Quite whose idea it was to illustrate the controls thus I don’t know. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a woman.

But you know what? If ever I needed motivation to up my game, there it is. Speed up? Yes, gentlemen, I think I will.

Eat my dust, boys.
