Angkor Wat was first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum.
Breaking from the Shaivism tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture which got major influence from Kalinga architectural style.It has become a symbol of Cambodia,appearing on its national flag, and it is the country’s prime attraction for visitors.
As I stand face to face with Angkor Wat, I was overwhelmed by the impressive, magnificent view.

世界遺産の代名詞かのごとく名の知られたアンコール・ワットは、カンボジア・シェムリアップにあるアンコール遺跡の一つで、遺跡群を代表する寺院建築です。サンスクリット語でアンコールは王都、クメール語でワットは寺院を意味し、大伽藍と美しい彫刻の数々から、クメール建築の傑作と称えられ、カンボジア国旗の中央にも同国の象徴として描かれています。
カンボジア人の心のルーツ，支えになっている遺跡と言えましょう。
私が初めてアンコール・ワットと対峙した時，観光客で溢れかえり賑やかな遺跡であるにもかかわらず、その荘厳さに圧倒されたのをおぼえています。
