What are Essential Oils? Well to be honest, I didn’t exactly know. Obviously they are oils but why are they so magical? Why is everyone and their mom talking about them and using them? I’ve heard such great things about them and decided to do a little research on this trendy phenomenon. I mean, they must be good if they’re loved and used by so many, right? Google told me that an essential oil is “a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted. ” Great, now what does that mean?
Essential oils seem to have a ton of uses but some of the most common uses include aromatherapy, household cleaning products, personal beauty care, and natural medicine treatments. So it sounds like they can be used for anything and everything right? I found these AMAZING charts on Dr. Axe and it explains a ton of great ways you can use essential oils. 101 ways to be exact! So I decided to put some of these to the test! I received a Starer Kit from Piping Rock that included Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Ceadrwood, and Frankincense Oils. I also received a diffuser and couldn’t wait to bust it out! I tried diffusing Lavender first to calm my kids down (didn’t seem to work like I thought it would but then again I thought they would just magically chill out immediately and it didn’t happen ha) and I also diffused Peppermint and I loved how that smelled. There are apparently a ton of different combinations to try depending on what you’re looking to do, seasonal scents, etc.
Since I suffer from anxiety I was so excited to hear that Lavender was a great remedy for it. One night while scrolling Instagram, I came across The Curated Carrot and fell in love with their tassel necklaces. But then I started reading the descriptions and I realized they were essential oil diffusers! How cool is that?! To use it as a diffuser, you put 2-3 drops of essential oil on the tassel. This way, you can take your essential oil with you wherever you go
My daughter has had a hacking cough for over a month now (doctor says it’s allergies, who knows), so I decided to try and make my own little “Vicks Rub” and put it on her feet. I used Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus Oil. I rubbed it on her feet and then put socks over them. And I think it definitely helped! I also diffused Peppermint because that’s also said to help for opening up the sinuses.
There are seriously so many things you can do with oils and I’m so excited to keep trying and learning more. Since I only started with a few, I wanted to add a few things to my collection.
I also recently ordered:
–4 Theifs blend which is said to be uplifting, energizing, cleanse negative emotions and clear doubt, as well as a chemical-free solution to household cleaners.
–Calming which is said to be sublimely relaxing and relieve stress.
–Sweet Almond Carrier Oil so that I can apply the essential oils directly to skin.
Which brings me to my next point; most things I’ve read said to not apply the essential oils directly to the skin. However I had a TERRIBLE migraine the other day and put some Peppermint on my temples and behind my ears. Within minutes, I kid you not, I felt SO much better. Now after doing some research I’ve discovered that it’s actually not good to put the pure essential oils directly on the skin, so next time I will use a carrier oil (a carrier oil is something like coconut oil, olive, etc that dilutes the pure oil). And it’s super important to never apply the oil directly to children, as their skin is more sensitive and it could cause allergic reaction, rashes, or other problems!
So there you have it! I am by NO means an expert and I’m just starting to learn all of the benefits that come from using oils. It’s going to take a lot of experimenting but I’m super excited to try! If you’re interested in trying them for yourselves, you can use this link to get $10 off your first order of $40 or more or $5 off your order under $40. I personally would recommend one of the starter kits and add on some carrier oils
So now I need your help! If you use essential oils, which are your favorites? What do you use them for? Leave me anything and everything you know about them please!
