Thick cataract glasses & the likes are things of the past. Modern cataract surgery techniques make it so easy & convenient to remove cataract from young adults. Moreover, intra ocular lenses are almost inserted in the same session. Cataract in young adults was dreadful in the past, but is not so anymore. Likewise, waiting for cataracts to mature before surgery is no more required. It is now fit for surgery from the moment it is causing difficulty in vision. Although retinal detachment is still a difficult condition, but with widespread awareness & treatment options, most of them can be prevented before they cause loss of vision. Macular degeneration is still blinding, but with early detection & proper evaluation with advanced imaging equipments & anti VGEF drugs it is quite possible to salvage vision. The last couple of decades has witnessed new techniques emerge from laboratories to ophthalmologists bringing succor to people in distress. Although the end is still in dark, awareness of eye health issues is commonly relevant.  Common Eye Problems & DiseasesCommon eye problems & diseases which can affect anyone at any age include – ·   Presbyopia–This is a condition when you are unable to see close objects or read small print. Often corrected with reading glasses, Presbyopia happens gradually, but most people may not notice any change until age 40 or more.·   Floaters – When you see tiny spots or specks floating across field of vision in outdoors or well-lit rooms; these floaters are often normal. But they indicate serious eye problems like retinal detachment when accompanied by light flashes. In case you see sudden changes in the type of flashes, see a doctor immediately.·   Dry Eyes–When tear glands do not make enough or produce poor quality of tears, it results in dry eyes. Dry eyes cause itching, burning, are uncomfortable & rarely lead to loss of vision. Special eye drops, or plugs placed in tear ducts or humidifiers placed in home can offer respite from dry eyes. A new procedure called Lipiflow which uses heat & pressure to treat dry eyes can also be recommended.·   Tearing–Too many tears can result from being sensitive to wind, light or temperature changes. Wearing sunglasses & shielding eyes can often solve this problem. Tearing is also an indication of a more serious problem like a blocked tear duct or eye infections which are both treatable.·   Cataracts – These are cloudy areas which develop within eye lens. When cataracts develop, light finds it difficult to get through the lens to retina at the back of the eye where images are processed thereby resulting in impairment of vision. Cataracts most often form slowly & cause no pain. They can be small, large or thick, but can effectively be removed by surgery.·   Glaucoma – Typically, a progressive deterioration of optic nerve, Glaucoma is less common & can be caused by factors like blockage of blood vessels, severe eye infection, inflammatory disorders or injury to eye. Most people with primary glaucoma show no early symptoms or pain. Treatments for glaucoma can include eye drop prescriptions or surgery.·   Conjunctivitis–Tissue lining the eyelids & covering cornea becomes inflamed in this condition. It can eventually cause burning, itching, redness, discharge or feeling of something in eye. Conjunctivitis can occur among people of all ages & is generally caused by infection, exposure to irritants or chemicals, or allergies.·   Corneal Diseases–This is a dome shaped window at front of the eye. While helping focus light entering eye, injury, infection, disease & exposure to toxic agents can damage cornea. Common symptoms of corneal diseases include reduced vision, pain, watery eyes, redness and/or halo effect. Treatments include medicated eye-drops, adjustments to eye-glass prescriptions or surgery.Useful Eye Care TipsNever take eyes for granted.Use these 6 tips to protect your sight.·   Eat Right for Good Vision– Include vitamins C & E, zinc, lutein, & omega-3 fatty acids for good eye health.·   Quit Smoking – Smoking encourages macular degeneration, optic nerve damage & cataracts. Quit smoking again & again until you succeed. ·   Wear Sunglasses – Right type sunglasses protect eyes from UV radiation from sunlight. Polarized lenses reduce glare while driving. Wrap-around lenses help protect eyes from sides.  ·   Use Safety Eyewear – It would be ideal to wear safety or protective goggles especially when you are working with airborne or hazardous materials on job. Certain sporting activities like racquetball, ice hockey & lacrosse can lead to eye injury, therefore protective gears like helmets, face masks & polycarbonate sports goggles should be worn to shield eyes.·   Look Away from Computer Screen–Staring too long at computer screens can cause dry eyes, blurry vision, eyestrain & trouble focusing at distant objects along with headaches, neck, back & shoulder pain.·   Regular Eye Check-Ups – All of us including young children need to get our eyes examined regularly. Choice between an optometrist or an ophthalmologist can be made depending upon the eye-health of the person.
