Brooklyn-based Eskimeaux is the latest bit of magic coming from the lovely people at Double Double Whammy. Though she’s been around for a while, playing music as a part of Frankie Cosmos, Bellows and The Epoch, Gabrielle Smith has always gone a different and more personal route with her solo project, Eskimeaux. Blossoming from home demos to a polished full band, “Broken Necks” is the first bright taste of her debut album O.K. Smith uses the song to make sense of a particularly difficult end of a long and close relationship.
Rhythmically charged with syncopated synths and drums, “Broken Necks” sneaks in bits of high pitched synths then rushes forward with urgency. It’s the twee sort of pop that Double Double Whammy does so well with some extra chutzpah behind it. O.K. is out May 12.
