I visited Ikea for the first time a few weeks ago with my mom and Hannah….addicted!! I bought 2 pillow forms (here) & 2 pillow covers. When I got home I realized the pillow forms were 26 x 26 & the covers were 20 x 20, I must have been too excited about the excellent prices that I forgot to check the size. I knew I wanted to have the new pillows out for our Easter party, so I started to search online for easy pillow covers. I found this excellent tutorial on a blog called Wonder Forest (here). Her blog says 5 minutes…yeah right!
I am not going to do a step by step tutorial. I am going to add a few pictures and send you over to Wonder Forest blog to check out her step by step instructions. I also watched a few YouTube videos to help when I was slightly confused (this was my favorite).
You may remember this rocking chair that I bought at an estate sale for $15 and repainted. For the full post look here. Don’t you just love the blue and white outdoor fabric!? I found it at JoAnn’s fabric and of course used a coupon!
I bought 1/2 yard of outdoor fabric, a small rectangle pillow form, and already had on hand the thread, pins, and scissors.
Once the fabric is cut, iron down and sew a hem on both sides (the part laying on top of the pillow form in the above picture). Check out this YouTube video to see exactly what I’m talking about.
Pin the fabric inside out. Place the rough looking hemmed edge on top so that it will be hidden once the fabric is right side out (I know that sounds confusing…just watch the YouTube video
Once I made the little pillow, I worked up the courage to make the two 26 x 26 pillow covers. I was really surprised how big that is!! A pillow this size would cost $50 or more. I paid about $50 for 3 pillow forms & all the fabric!!
I think I will add a small piece of Velcro or a button to secure the back closed on the larger pillows. The smaller pillow stays nicely closed on it own. This is a front and back picture…I am in love with this gray & white fabric that I picked up from JoAnn’s also. It was like pulling teeth to get Brent (my new fiancé) to take these photos since the pillows are in Conroe and I am writing this post from San Antonio, so no judgments on the quality please.
I love that I can change the covers out whenever I get tired of the fabric or if they get dirty and I need to wash them. Such a great idea, why did I just now discover this?
