Jay and I are looking for ways we can continue to work with our son over summer vacation who is transitioning in the fall from kindergarten to first grade.
For writing, his current teacher suggested we have him keep a journal like the one he has in school now. When he comes home from camp he can take fifteen minutes to write two sentences. She also suggested he could write her letters and she’ll write him back.
For reading, during the school year he really enjoyed his weekly trip to the school library to pick out his book. We go to our town library sometimes, but not as regularly. I think over the summer I’ll try to make it more of a scheduled weekly thing, like every Saturday morning.
As far as math goes, that one isn’t as easy to figure out. We’ll do our best to seek out experiences that make him count, measure and compare quantities. Like games and activities where he can work with time and money.
What are you doing to encourage your children’s learning this summer? We’d love to hear your ideas!
