Embrace an Eco-Friendly Summer Clear Out: Your Guide to a Greener Refresh

Posted on the 17 August 2023 by Statused

As we make our way towards the end of summer, thoughts turn to the coming new season. In order to shake off the months that have gone before, this is the perfect opportunity to downsize and declutter around the home.

If you’re set to embark on your cleaning journey in time for the autumn, consider incorporating eco-friendly practices that not only bring a breath of fresh air to your space but also contribute positively to the environment.

To help you go green when you get cleaning, check out these tips.

Do an inventory

Before you can plan ahead, you’ll need to take stock of your possessions.

Back in 2019, it seemed like everyone was adopting Marie Kondo’s cleaning method. This is a decluttering and tidying action plan that is designed to help both on a practical and personal level. So, we should technically be well versed in clearing out our belongings.

But since the rise of the ‘KonMari’ method, we’ve all spent more time than we ever thought we would at home. After the events of the last few years, a huge number of workers are working hybrid, dividing their time between the office and the spare bedroom.

While it’s likely all of this time spent at home has made us see what changes need to be made, there’s also the flipside, where we spend so much time in the space that we can no longer face making these changes.

If you’ve been putting off your Marie Kondo moment, now is the perfect time to thoughtfully evaluate your possessions, determine what serves you, and work out what needs to go. For the items you won’t use anymore, explore options for resale and recycling.

Be a responsible seller

If you plan to sell some of your higher-end belongings, think carefully about how you’ll do it. Take the time to explore the most eco-conscious ways of selling your items on by looking into the green credentials of companies that you might want to sell through.

Where possible, try to keep sales local in order to reduce the amount of carbon emissions involved in transporting goods across the map.

Embrace sustainable shopping

Fast fashion is rapidly falling out of favour, with many young people looking for sustainable alternatives. Why not join them when you look to update your wardrobe for the coming season? After your clear out, you might decide to introduce some new autumn looks. Rather than hitting the high street, take a look at your local vintage stores and charity shops to see if there are any gems to be found.

Similarly, you might want to create a capsule wardrobe that you can go to throughout the year. Having the basics in place such as jeans and a t-shirt, you can add different pieces without buying items that you’ll wear once and forget about.

Second-hand shopping doesn’t have to stop at fashion either. Go hunting for preloved jewellery and accessories.

Share the joy

Discover the art of decluttering by gifting items to friends, family, or those in need. Embrace the opportunity to spread positivity while lightening your load.

Is there a dress that you know our friend will love? Or a piece of jewellery that doesn’t suit your style but could be the perfect gift for a family member? Passing on the joy to others is a lovely – and sustainable – way of clearing out your home.
