Elk River Falls – Dog Friendly Fun in North Carolina | A Photo Essay

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

Elk River Falls is located on the North Carolina/Tennessee border. On our visit to the Banner Elk Winery and Villa, we were searching for something dog friendly to do with Zoe and Punkin. Elk River Falls turned out to be the perfect adventure for the four of us. We wanted to get out and play in the amazing weather and see a bit of nature. The Falls is a must-see if you are in the area.

Elk River Falls -this way

Getting to the falls was pretty simple. Assuming you are starting from downtown Banner Elk, take the main road Highway 194 West about 7 miles. Then hit 19E and make a right. Go one Mile and make a right on Little Elk Road and then your first left on Old Mill Road and then your first right on Elk River Road. You’ll see a large sign marking the turn off for Elk River Road. Drive 4 more miles on Elk River Road and you’re there!

Follow me to the falls

It is a short, easy hike from the parking lot to the falls.

Punkin made most of the climb himself…most!

Valet service

We did this short hike in February, so the weather was cool and crisp. The water was a bit cold for swimming, but apparently just right for watering your pets.

Zoe being hand feed

We arrived at the top of the falls and I immediately started to worry about the doggies going over.

Punkin hitching another ride

I always seem to forget that dogs have great instincts. Shame on me!

Zoe loving the outdoors

The Falls were stunning!

Everyone had a great time. Can’t wait to do this again!
