Black Friday sales are upon us. Every year, I roundup some of my favorites both here and at Put This On (we’ll have a comprehensive list of every worthwhile sale later this week, on Friday). Some of my favorite stores, however, are getting a jump on things. Many have started their Black Friday promotions already, with discounts going as deep as 50% off. From Mr. Porter to No Man Walks Alone to East Dane, here are eight early-bird sales I think are pretty great.
Mr. Porter: Up to 30% Off Select Items
Mr. Porter’s massive selection has put them in everyone’s orbit. Whether you favor classic tailored clothing, Japanese workwear, or oversized, minimalist contemporary garb, Mr. Porter likely carries more than a handful of brands for you.
Today, they started their end-of-season sale (not just a Black Friday promotion), where you can take up to 30% off select items. Inis Meain’s sweaters are expensive, even with the discount, but absolutely exquisite and a joy to wear. Chimala, Blue Blue Japan, and Kapital are personal favorites for workwear; Eidos for something vaguely Italian inspired; and SNS Herning for textured knitwear you can layer under heavy coats (be sure to size up). I was also pleasantly surprised to see how many footwear brands are included in the promotion – Viberg, Edward Green, RM Williams, JM Weston, Common Projects, John Lobb, George Cleverley, Yuketen, and Visvim. I’m personally most tempted by these JM Weston Golf derbies, which I think would look great with jeans.
No Man Walks Alone: Up to 30% Off Sitewide
No Man Walks Alone is a sponsor on this site, but also one of my favorite online stores. Their Sartoria Formosa suits and sport coats are some of the best values in high-end tailoring; their Rota trousers are slim, but feature a good rise; and their G. Inglese dress shirts are the best-fitting button-ups I’ve tried in the ready-to-wear market.
I also love them for casualwear. This season, I bought this Kaptain Sunshine Traveler coat, oversized Robert Geller bomber, and pair of full-cut Naissance chinos (pictured above). The idea of paying top dollar for baggy, double-pleated chinos seems crazy, but they’re a great way to play with your silhouette without having your pants look like they’re on loan from Jim Harbaugh. I also recently bought this black holdall from Frank Clegg to help with holiday travels. The quality of the leather is terrific and the classic design pairs well with tailored clothing or casualwear. Lastly, this season’s Kaptain Sunshine, Camoshita, and Inis Meain selections are special standouts. Worth a browse.
J. Crew’s: 40% Off Plus Free Shipping, Code THANKU
J. Crew’s continual sales have become somewhat of a running joke on Twitter, but it’s surprisingly difficult to get one of their 40% off codes. I’ve been waiting months for one, at least until yesterday, when I applied the THANKU code on this Wallace & Barnes flannel. Wallace & Barnes is J. Crew’s higher-end collection inspired by archival workwear and military surplus gear. The fabrics and construction are typically better than what you’d find in J. Crew’s mainline, and I think they’re unbeatable for basics. They’re a great way to fill gaps in your wardrobe without spending a fortune. My favorites in the line are the flannels and they come just under $60 with the promotion.
East Dane: Up to 30% Off, Code MORE17 Stackable
East Dane has one of the best sale selections every season. I think that’s because their inventory is showcased in a straightforward manner, and their brand selection isn’t that tightly edited. As such, the store flies under the radar for many menswear enthusiasts. On the upside, that also means that you can often find some great deals here.
For Black Friday, East Dane is offering tiered discounts. Take up to 30% off your entire order, depending on how much you spend, with the checkout code MORE17. For the best deals, you’ll want to stack the code on already-discount items in the sale section. Here, you’ll find minimalist sneakers from Zespa; Robert Geller’s oversized bomber; black APC side zips; Chamula huaraches, and some of the best prices I’ve seen for Master Piece backpacks (I love those). There’s also a ton of textured knitwear here from brands such as SNS Herning (size up), E. Tautz (size down), Tomorrowland, Our Legacy, and Howlin’ by Morrison. Those would make for great layering pieces, adding a bit of visual interest underneath casual coats.
Namu: 30% Off Sitewide with the Code TURKEY
There are a million shops nowadays carrying the same items from Alden and Engineered Garments, or more fashion forward labels such as Vetements and Margiela. It’s much harder to find shops doing something different. Namu, a sponsor on this site, is a relatively new store based in Texas. They offer both men’s and women’s wear, often with an eye towards a style that straddles classic workwear and contemporary minimalism. I love their distinctive point of view.
On the men’s side, you can find waffle knitted sweaters from ts(s), wrap coats from Document, naval deck sneakers from Anatomica, and mid-rise washed jeans from Ordinary Fits – all brands that are hard to find outside of East Asia. And, at the moment, everything on the site is 30% off with the checkout code TURKEY. Much of what you’ll find here falls in what I’ve called warm minimalism, which has the austerity of darker brands such as Yohji Yamamoto, but feels friendlier and more approachable. It’s a great look for guys who value simplicity and subtly.
SSENSE: Up to 50% Off Select Items
The selection at SSENSE (pronounced essence, confusingly) is a bit more fashion forward than what I normally write about, but they carry some of my favorite brands. Blue Blue Japan and Common Projects make for easy wardrobe additions; Master Piece is great for bags; and I like Lemaire, Margiela, and Studio Nicholson for contemporary casualwear. Studio Nicholson is a womenswear label that has recently made forays into men’s clothing. Their small, but well designed, line centers around the sort of wide pants and oversized topcoat ensemble that’s trendy right now. A bit dowdy, to be sure, but in a way I find appealing.
Club Monaco: Up to 30% Off, Applies to Third-Party Items
The best sales are always the ones that cover third-party items, especially at stores where few people would think to look. Club Monaco’s house line is a great value, although their sales often include third-party names. Like now, where you can get up to 35% off, depending how much you spend (use the code SHOPFRIDAY).
The code works on everything, including the things you’ll find in Club Monaco’s “Brands We Love” section, which is where they carry labels such as Barbour, Golden Bear, Inis Meain, Allen Edmonds, and Zespa (along with many others). Filson, Porter, and Mismo bags can be had starting around $150; Trickers shoes are a great deal at $280. I’m also a fan of Club Monaco’s house-label knitwear (mostly the plain merinos, as the cashmeres can be a bit dicey in terms of quality). If you can pick up a few to meet that $200 purchase minimum, sweaters start around $60.
Kiehl’s: $20 Off Orders Over $65 with the Code JINGLE
I use Kiehl’s for all sorts of things. Their scrub soaps are a terrific value at $45 for a three pack. They’re little more expensive than your usual Dove bars, but they also last much longer (and the grains help slough off dead skin). Their Facial Fuel line is a nice collection of skin care products aimed at men; their Anti-Shine Moisturizer is great for managing oilier complexions in the summer. I also like their shampoos, which are formulated for different hair types, and the Midnight Recovery Oil, which is a nighttime treatment that allows you to cut back on moisturizer the following morning.
