English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is winning over US fans with sleeper hit “The A Team.”
Twenty-one-year old singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released his first full-length studio album, Plus, to UK audiences September 2011.
Fast forward to late 2012, and the artist is making his way into the American music scene with “The A Team.”
The lead single from his début album, “The A Team” is controversial in subject matter, telling of a young woman’s descent into addiction and prostitution.
“’The A Team’ came from an experience I had when I did a gig at a homeless shelter,” Sheeran told Billboard. “I was 18 at the time and kind of quite naïve. So, I was a bit taken aback by some of the stories that I heard. “
“I wanted to write it so it sounded kind of upbeat, so you wouldn’t really know what it’s about, “ Sheeran said of the dark lyrical content.
Subtlety at its best, Sheeran also explained the song’s title and recurrent phrase, “the ‘class A’ team.”
“A drug like crack cocaine is called a ‘class A’ drug. That’s in the same category as heroin,” Sheeran said.
“Instead of making it clear and just saying what the problem was, I’d say, ‘She’s in the ‘class A’ team.’ It was kind of my way of covering up (a person’s addiction), I guess, making it a bit more subtle.”
The track currently sits at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. You can check out the video below.
