EAT: Kingyo Izakaya – VanEats Package in Vancouver, BC

By Jsleigh14 @jsleigh14

Kingyo has always been one of my favorite casual Japanese restaurants in town. They serve super authentic Japanese dishes made of only the best ingredientsd. The other day, I had the pleasure of sampling the new Simply Kingyo Vaneats.ca menu. This $22 package includes a 3-course dinner that I very much enjoyed.

The inside of Kingyo is very ethnic with its bamboo and wooden decor. It’s often very loud here, but that’s just how it’s like in Japan too!

Kingyo offers a selection of irresistible Japanese beers. Japanese beers are lighter than others, which makes them easier to drink. I got the Sapporo with my meal, one of my all-time favourites.

My first dish was the Tomato Kimchi Tofu Salad with Tuna Tataki. I’ve never had a salad like this one before, but I absolutely loved it. The tomatoes were very flavourful with a hint of spiciness – I’ve never eaten a full tomato at once until now. The lightly seared tuna was also fantastic, since it was extremely fresh along with a soft texture.

The next dish of the package was the Stone Grilled Kobe Beef. The “stone grilled” part is very literal, because I was actually given a hot rock to cook the raw Kobe beef on. You don’t have to leave the beef on the rock for long, just a few seconds on each side is already enough. I intentionally left the beef a bit rare. This Kobe beef tasted great though, it was soft and evidently from a higher grade.

The last dish was the Clam Ramen. It was a decently-sized bowl of ramen that was filled with some clams and veggies inside. The clams were very tasty and I enjoyed them a lot. The noodles, on the other hand, weren’t the best I’ve had in town because they were a little bit stiff.

I also tried a few of Kingyo’s dishes outside of the dining package. The Edamame is an easy favorite for everyone. These green beans are fun to eat and can be slightly addictive after a while. At least they are healthy!

A trip to a Japanese restaurant isn’t complete without some sashimi, so I got Kingyo’s 3 kinds of sashimi. The fish offered are different depending on the day or the season. I really liked all of the fish I got and they tasted so fresh that I didn’t even need to add on any extra flavor with soy sauce.

Lastly, the Chicken Karage is also another easy favorite of mine. The karage served here is accompanied with three different salts from around the world. This fried chicken is the best of its kind. Crispy on the outside and soft on the outside, it’s really hard not to love.

The SimplyKingyo dining pass can be purchased at http://www.vaneats.ca and is valid until November 30, so purchase it before it’s too late! I personally believe that this pass has a great value, so try it out when you get a chance. I’m sure that you will end up loving Kingyo just as much as I do!

  • Amazing food
  • Dining pass has good value

  • Hard to find parking
  • Small portions (as with most gourmet Japanese places)
