EAT: Cattle Cafe 牛仔餐廳 – Hong Kong Cafe in Richmond, BC

From time to time, I do miss having some good Hong Kong food. From fish balls to milk tea, I love it all. Fortunately for me, Richmond isn’t too far away and it is practically a miniature Hong Kong. One Hong Kong Cafe I particularly like is Cattle Cafe, a clean and modern restaurant on Alexandra road. It’s the perfect place for me to have casual lunches that evoke a sense of nostalgia. I went here for lunch the other day with my Richmondian friend who also loves Hong Kong food but has never been.

My favourite Hong Kong snack is definitely the Bubble Waffle. I remember that I’d used to buy them off of street carts in Hong Kong everytime I see them…it was my version of an ice cream truck. The bubble waffle here at Cattle Cafe wasn’t bad, but not the best I’ve had since it can be crunchier.

Bubble Tea goes with a Bubble Waffle like how wine goes with cheese. I ordered a regular Milk Tea with Pearl to have alongside my waffle and it was overall a pretty good drink. But, the pearls were a little on the mushy side though.

The Custom Noodle Combo at Cattle Cafe is one of my favourite lunches on a budget in town. For this combo, you can choose a type of noodle, its soup base, and two toppings to go with it. The best part is, this is all for under $10. On my last visit, I got glass noodles in peanut soup with fish tofu and beef balls. I know that all of this doesn’t sound too appetizing when described in English…but trust me it tastes fantastic. The portions are also extremely generous, I’ve never left this restaurant with any space left in my stomach.

So if you’re looking for a nice place to have a casual Hong Kong style meal, Cattle Cafe is certainly worth considering. It has most types of Hong Kong food you can imagine and I like how clean and tidy this place is. There is also a location in Burnaby close to Metrotown, but I’ve never been there. Avoid coming here during peak hours though, since there can be lineups. Other than that, I guarantee that you will leave this restaurant with a full stomach and not an empty wallet.
