Easy Valentine’s Day Craft: Birch Bark Heart Garland

Have you ever wanted to decorate for a holiday but the signature colors of that holiday just aren’t your favorite. That’s how I feel when decorating for Valentine’s Day. I’m not a huge fan of the color red. Pink is ok but in a house full of boys, it’s not the top of my list either. But you can decorate with colors other than the traditional colors. I’ve got a lot of white, gray and gold going on in my family room and I wanted to extend those natural colors to decorating for Valentine’s Day. So I made an Easy Valentine’s Day Birch Bark Heart Garland to add to my neutral decor.

I had some scraps of birch bark that I had leftover from my Birch Bark Angel Wings from Christmas. I knew I could use the scraps for a little project so I saved them. Can you say hello craft supply hoarder?

If you don’t have birch bark, you can find it at your local craft store or online. I got mine from Save-on-Crafts. You’ll need a good pair of scissors, a pen or pencil, twine and a heart template. I can’t draw an even heart so I just printed a template from a google image search.

Trace your heart template onto the back of the birch bark and cut out your hearts. I ended up cutting out 10 hearts for my garland. But of course you can cut out as many as you need.

I used a small hole punch and added a hole on both sides. Then I used some twine to connect the hearts together.

I draped the birch heart garland over my vintage ladder to add a little Valentine’s Day charm. But it would look great on a front porch or a fireplace mantel too.
