Title: Panoramic view of the Topkapi Saray Palace (section 1)

Date: ca. 1860-1880

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

Photographers: Pascal Sébah (1823-1886) & Policarpe Joaillier (1888-1908)

Process: gelatin silver photograph

Note: The Topkapı ("Cannon Gate") Palace was built in the 15th century under Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and then expanded over the centuries. For a long time, it was the administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans, who lived there with their concubines, children, and servants. In the 1920s, it became a museum.

The Topkapı Palace is part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, which UNESCO recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
