Sharing my favorite images from the early days of photography...

Title: Ancient Ruins in the Cañon de Chelle, N.M. In a niche 50 feet above present Cañon bed.

Location: Arizona, United States

Date: 1873

Photographer: Timothy O'Sullivan (1840-1882)

Process: albumen print

Note: Located in northeastern Arizona, Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest continuously inhabited areas of North America; it is also the land of the Ancestral Puebloans (a.k.a. Anasazi) and Navajo. In 1871-1874, O'Sullivan documented the "unexplored" lands of the American Southwest, including the Canyon, as part of Lt. George M. Wheeler's survey west of the 100th meridian.
