A 12-month trial of electric scooters is being rolled out in parts of the West Midlands.
From 10 September, 200 e-scooters will be available in Birmingham and Coventry, before more will be deployed in Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Warwickshire.
Devices are limited to 15.5 mph on any road at 30 mph or below. They cost £ 1 to unlock and 20p per minute to drive.
The trial in the region is the largest of its kind in the UK.
"Electric scooters will help bring more flexibility, choice and greener travel solutions to the West Midlands, at a time when we face a climate emergency and we urge people to leave their cars at home," said the mayor. West Midlands, Andy Street, he said.
Up to 10,000 e-scooters are expected to be distributed across the region in the course of the process, with people initially allowed to ride electric scooters only in close proximity to Birmingham and Coventry city center.
The Department of Transport passed legislation earlier this year to accelerate the roll out of electric scooter trials across the UK.
Swedish company Voi has been in charge of managing the vehicles, Transport for West Midlands announced Thursday.
Bikers will need a provisional or full driver's license to unlock an electric scooter, and reduced rates are offered for NHS workers, students, and low-income people.
Lucy Yu of Voi said: "In the UK, 60% of car journeys are between one and three miles, which greatly increases congestion.
"Cars no longer fit the way we live today and we estimate that 20% of short trips could be replaced by low-carbon electric scooters with a minimum lifespan of five years. Electric scooters provide a compelling alternative that will exceed the speed of the car. "
