The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday arrested former MP Duminda Silva while receiving treatment at the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said a special CID team made this arrest at the hospital and the police will file facts in Court pertaining to his arrest.
SSP Thalduwa said that Silva is presently receiving treatment under police custody. The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the arrest of Duminda Silva with the issuance of restraining order suspending the Presidential Pardon granted to him. Silva was sentenced to death in connection with the murder of four persons including former Parliamentarian Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.
The former Parliamentarian who was serving a death sentence over murder charges, was released from prison on a “special Presidential Pardon” in June 2021.
The Supreme Court also issued an Interim Order restraining him from traveling abroad and the Attorney General was also ordered to provide the necessary instructions and assistance in this manner. Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justice Yasantha Kodagoda and Justice Achala Wengappuli made this order pursuant to three Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the legality of the Presidential Pardon granted to former MP Duminda Silva were taken up for leave to proceed.
