Dubuisson Surfine

By I Think About Beer @ithinkaboutbeer

Brasserie Dubuisson is one of the longest running continually operated breweries in Belgium with a family history that goes back 8 generations to 1769. In Belgium, Dubuisson’s most famous for its Bush Ambrée which is known as Scaldis in the United States. They were asked to not use the Bush name in the US in case it was to be confused with the Busch beers produced by Anheuser-Busch.

Surfine is Dubuisson’s newest product, although those who have followed the brewery for a long time will recognize the name. It is in fact, not a revival of the old Surfine but a new recipe using the old name. Dubuisson, located near the village of Pipaix in the Walloon province of Hainaut is located in the heart of Belgian’s Saison country a few short minutes away from Brasserie Dupont, didn’t have a Saison in their portfolio. The recipe they created features 3 different malts, 3 different, hops, & 3 different yeast strains (one of which is a Brett strain). The results: Surfine Triple Saison.

With a gold medal at the 2016 Brussels Beer Challenge in the modern saison category, Surfine is off to a good start.

Appearance: lightly hazy, orange, beige head, great retention.

Aroma: Fruity, mango, earthy notes, caramel, light funk, floral.

Taste: Biscuit, floral, perfume-y, light funk.

Overall Impression: The carbonation makes for a very creamy texture and mouthfeel. The flavors are nicely balanced leaning towards the fruity side. While it is pretty dry now, I imagine the Brett will further dry this one out over time. Fans of saisons should seek this one out as a new beer of this quality is always a welcome addition.

Availability: This beer is newer to the US market. You may have to request it at your favorite bottle shop. Imported by Total Beverage Solutions.
