Cry, cry and many more cries. One thing Mehak realized very soon that if babies demanded something, it was always in the form of a cry. Soft, shrill, low or loud, a cry was always disturbing, very disturbing. It was also very difficult to ascertain the cause of their cry whether it was hunger, colic, wet baby or a mosquito bite or something else. Happy moments were very few, when both were in a playable mood and they were a really a huge God sent relief. It was a Herculean task for her to oversee both of them with continuous demands. She had to do something fast before she would break down. Being an engineer herself, all she could think of was to sort out the demands using a technical approach. She started keeping a log of their demands. Every time a baby cried she would tend to her needs and note down the time and cause of her cry. Within a week she had all the data with her, which needed analysis. She counted the number of entries and filled in the respective totals against each cause. It was a Eureka for her, an eye opener. Probably her mother also missed out on guiding her on this crucial aspect. Almost 75% of the time the babies cried was because they were wet. She had followed her mother’s advice of getting washable cotton diapers stitched for them. They had to be changed frequently along with the sheets underneath. Mehak and Raj discussed this matter with their neighbor who had two small children and had passed this stage a year back. They advised them to go in for good quality disposable padded diapers, which are readily available at chemist shops. The quality of a diaper is considered good only if it does not feel wet to the baby at all. They are also cost effective considering the quantum of the convenience they offer. Without wasting any time, Mehak requested Raj to procure the diapers from the local chemist. To Mehak, it seemed that as if it was after many ages, she slept peacefully the whole night. Not only she, but the babies also had a comfortable sleep. She continued to keep her log and realized that the babies remained happy for the major part of the time. “Dry Baby, a Happy Baby” …Mehak vowed to educate every possible new parent whom she would come in contact. Let not the misery come in the way of enjoying life with the newborns.
