Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena instructed officials not to wait for decentralized funds to perform simple jobs. He expressed these views at the Maharagama Regional Coordination Committee which was held today (2024.02.15) under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.
Speaking on this occasion the Prime Minister stated;
“Today the country is in a very bad situation regarding drugs. Even you can be arrested at any time by the special unit that has been appointed. This is not a temporary welfare measure. Do your duty properly for the future welfare of the people. The government has already started implementing all the decisions taken in this regard.
The Inspector General of Police and the Minister in charge of the drug eradication campaign are monitoring the progress of the operation on a daily basis through a special unit. We don’t want bad names. Even though a person has supported me, supported the formation of the government, or supported the President, we cannot interfere with drugs and other illegal deals. The police should be the first to intervene in such cases.
The Municipal Council, Police and Divisional Secretary should pay attention to this. Please bring before law, if any illegal activities are being done in the name of other jobs. The Grama Niladhari officers and the municipality should be active and be alert on these police operations.
We should not wait until a complaint is lodged. It should be acted immediately upon receiving information. Everyone should work to give the full support of the Grama Sevaka officers and to police. In the past, the Mahasangha expressed its views on the drug menace. It is a matter of happiness that they have come to a compromise on the implementation of this campaign today.
Development goals should be implemented covering all the departments of the Municipal Council and Provincial Council. The municipal council should take responsibility for projects that are not implemented by it. If the post in front of the municipal council is broken, there is no need for decentralized funds to fix it. Don’t wait for decentralized funds to perform simple jobs.
The Prime Minister presented a stock of masks to Venerable Nikapota Chandrajothi Thera on this occasion.
Chairman of the Maharagama Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya Former Western Provincial Chief Minister Isura Devapriya, former Western Provincial Council members Upali Kodikara, Salochana Gamage, Kanti Kodikara and government officials participated in the event.
