There are thousands of 16-year-olds discovering the art of songwriting in their bedrooms right now. Then, there is Lupa. A classically trained violinist from Sydney, Lupa (otherwise known as Imogen Jones) melds together violin with drum beats, synthesizers and her sweet, airy vocals to create an incredibly intelligent sound. Her bedroom mixes are polished echoes of sonic ingenuity that reflect a complexity and sincerity far beyond her 16 years. “Statues” is a simple, somber, whirring tune that cohesively fuses her classical background with the smooth, patient electronic sound that has become quite popular in Australia. Swirling in melancholic and cinematic tones, Lupa pushes and pulls emphatic bass beats against a soft violin accompanied by her whispery vocals to create a pleasantly hypnotic, aural vacuum. Though lovely on her own, I think if she combined her talents with that of Brisbane producer Danny Harley (aka The Kite String Tangle), some sort of eclectic chillwave epiphany would occur. If you like this track, I also suggest her previous single, “Eyes Unclouded“. If you would like to support Lupa on her musical journey, you can buy “Statues” on iTunes or get it for free on her Triple J Unearthed page where you can leave her a nice, little review.
