Don't Be Hijacked By Your Emotions

By Jessicavenoy @lovelyjesscuh
As women we can all relate to being hijacked by our emotions. Or at least I hope I'm not the only one who has struggled with this. I used to be REALLY bad, but I've grown a lot over the last few months and I'm getting better at not letting my emotions control me.
What does it mean to be hijacked by your emotions? Basically allowing your words and/or actions to be directed solely by your emotions. So if you're angry you might snap at your loved ones and storm off. If you're sad you might sit in bed crying all day, refusing to see the light of day. If you're happy you might clap and jump up and down. If you're anxious you might sit on the couch and binge on Netflix.
I'm not saying I'm walking around like a robot, emotionless. But instead of letting my emotions run the show and dictate how the rest of my day or even week will go, I recognize them as they come, take a few moments to honor them, and then move forward. I've been able to stay more grounded and not be anxious or worried as often since practicing keeping my emotions in check. My thoughts are less clouded and I can even hear God more clearly.
I've fallen victim to hysterical behavior plenty of times in the past (and I'm sure I'll do it again in the future). Afterwards I feel drained. Keeping my emotions under control allows me to truly experience moments for what they are and it is SO much less exhausting.
I know that I keep bringing up meditation, but it truly has made such a difference in this area of my life!
So next time you feel like your emotions are in the driver's seat, step away for a moment, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that YOU are in control of your emotions, not the other way around.
