I've seen and loved all of the movies but for some reason, I've been reluctant to read the books. I don't know why. I regularly read books adapted for film and TV so there's no reason not to read the Divergent books. I loved this and wish I'd read it long before now. This is very true to the film in case you're wondering. I loved the idea of Tris's society where everyone belongs to one of four factions and anyone who doesn't fit neatly into one of these boxes is seen as dangerous and a threat. Tris is a Stiff, born in the prim and proper faction, Abnegation who rules the government but chooses to join the bold and daring Dauntless who protect the other factions from the horrors allegedly said to live outside the city walls, they are sort of like the police. Much of the book focuses on Tris trying to survive Dauntless initiation and prove she's not a Stiff while fending off bullies who try and kill her when calling her names isn't enough. Tris also has a secret that will get her killed; each teenager undertakes aptitude tests which indicate which faction they could belong to before they choose. Tris's showed she had skills suitable for three factions which make her Divergent, a dangerous threat. She struggles to hide this fact during the various trials and discovers hostility towards her old faction, Abnegation is spiralling out of control.
