Diamond Lake Neighborhood... Unsung Gem of South Minneapolis and Where the Charter for the City of Minneapolis Was Signed

By Homesmsp @HomesMSP

When people think of South Minneapolis they most often think of the area around the city lakes and Minnehaha Creek. But if you are looking for picturesque and kid friendly, don't overlook the Diamond Lake neighborhood. Often paired with neighboring Hale and Page neighborhoods bordering on the north to Minnehaha Parkway, these are outstanding residential areas (94% single family homes) with not only easy access to trails and parks, but also to downtown Minneapolis, Southdale and MOA shopping and the airport.

When Twin Cities Metro magazine came out with their list of the 20 most liveable neighborhoods in Minneapolis a few years ago they ranked Diamond Lake third!  The reason it ranked so high was because of its very low crime rate, high-ranked schools (Hale Elementary just over the border in the Hale neighborhood), housing costs and high marks for recreation (Pearl Park has a wading pool, ball fields, recreation center and wintertime skating; Diamond Lake Park boasts wetlands for canoeing and birding).

I currently have a home listed for sale at 5800 Clinton Avenue, on the west side of Diamond Lake... not far from where it is said the charter for the city of Minneapolis was signed under an oak tree at Charles Hoag's  Diamond Lake Farm (at the corner of Diamond Lake Road and Clinton Avenue South). Charles Hoag is said to have played a central role in the naming of the city of Minneapolis. Evidently Hennepin county commissioners had selected "Albion" as the name for the city, but Hoag and newspaper editor George Bowman didn't like it. Hoag came up with joining 'polis', meaning city, with part of Minnehaha, indicating waterfall, and proposed "Minnehapolis".  The 'h' was dropped and "Minneapolis" was accepted as the name of the city in a town meeting in December 1852.

There are currently 26 homes for sale in the Diamond Lake neighborhood, ranging in price from $174,900 to $549,900. Check out homes for sale in Diamond Lake and nearby neighborhoods... let us know if you if you find anything you would like to know more about or would like to see in person!
