Devendra Banhart was well-received last Wednesday night as he strolled onto the stage enrobed in lopsided smile and dun cardigan, greeting onlookers with his charming patois of Spanish, English, and Portuguese. After a thunderous introductory applause and a few lovingly delivered solo songs, the rest of his band joined him on stage to deliver a range of new and old favorites, including a slew of tunes from their March release, Mala. Nothing from his albums, however, can quite compare to Devendra’s live show. Watching conductorial gestures, both graceful and erratic, it’s easy to understand how he ended up at the same venue that’s hosted everyone from Allen Toussaint to Philip Glass. He’s one of a kind.
