Passing through my "home" tube station of East Finchley has been a joy this summer thanks to the work of the children at Martin Primary School.
Their project – Destination East Finchley – encourages us to pause and think about where we have come from and where we are all going together. A celebration of community and diversity, it gives perfect food for thought for a journey from the suburbs to the heart of the original multi-cultural metropolis.
As we pause we are encouraged to fill in a little circular postcard detailing our backgrounds and how we came to be in the capital. We are similarly encouraged to pop a sticker on the map of the world to show our place of origin. The exhibition has made for some fascinating reading…
  … and the world map shows that even in suburban East Finchley we are a multi-ethnic, multi-racial bunch. It's a vivid way to illustrate one of the running themes of our London Walks tours – we live in one of the greatest cities for diversity in the world. My daughter took a moment to add Dunedin to the map on behalf of her late grandmother who lived in the area for many years…
If you are passing through East Finchley, don't miss it. It's proof that London REALLY IS Open.
