Desnoyer Park is part of St. Paul's Merriam Park neighborhood, named for Governor William Merriam and his developer father. This area has long been considered the midpoint between Minneapolis and St. Paul, and when they were planning to build the new state capitol in the 1890's Merriam's father donated 20 acres in the area for that purpose... with plans also being considered to build the St. Paul Cathedral nearby.
That didn't happen, and the site that was to have been the state capitol became the Town and Country Club, the second oldest continuously used golf course in the country. While most of the Merriam Park Neighborhood was developed in the late 1800's and early 1900's in a grid street pattern, the area around the golf course and the river developed later, and the meandering streets make it feel more like an after thought... but also add to its charm.
Mostly developed in the 1920's and 1930's, Desnoyer Park has tudors and bungalows, but it also has some mid-century ramblers as well as some later century moderns. Just steps to the Missippi River, you can follow the trails to the University of Minnesota... jump on the nearby freeway to either downtown St. Paul or Minneapolis... or visit the coffee shops and other businesses along the Marshall/Lake Street corridor in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
