Designer Knockoff Sunglasses

By Vixenmade @vixenMade

I love a designer piece.  But I honestly can't afford anything close to it, so I usually opt for knockoffs.
I'm not very good at making my own 'knockoffs', especially when it comes to clothes.  Still haven't mastered sewing my own clothes.
But.. a new accessory.. is doable.
I saw these in a magazine a little while back and I was a fan.

They're Victoria Beckham 'Granny Cat' sunglasses.  Very cool.  Yep.. a cool $545.
Yikes.

Well, checking out the dollar store.. I came across some decent looking shades.  For 2 dollars, I figured I'd take the chance and try to replicate the designer ones.

And here's how:
I used white acrylic paint, a small defined paint brush (two different sizes), some clear nail polish and the cheap sunglasses.

With a steady hand and a lot of patience, I painted the face of the sunglasses with the white acrylic paint.

I used a skinny brush to wipe/brush away the excess paint on the lenses and around the sides.  Like I said, patience.  I had to redo some areas a few times.

Then I used a wet Q-tip to clean up the areas.. be careful not to wipe away the painted areas that you want.

I also used a toothpick to pick off some dried areas and to scrape the paint to create an even line. It's not perfect, but it'll do.

After 2 or 3 coats of paint, drying between, you can paint over with the clear polish. Just be sure your paint has dried first.

I did 2 coats of the clear nail polish.  This will help it from chipping and make the finish a little glossy.

That's it.

Only a few steps.. but it takes time to perfect your lines and edges.

So what do you think?  Still cheap or knockoff?

You can kind of see the edges are uneven, I actually went back with a toothpick to clean up the lens area after I took these.  But overall, I'm happy with how they turned out.
